Donnellson, IA (Friday, August 7, 2020) – The Pepsi Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa returned to their normal Friday night of racing this week, with another weekly points night being held in all five weekly classes. Buford Dozing & Excavating and Big Country 103.1 would help to bring you the action, as two driver’s won their first features of the season at the track.
The 15 lap Discount Tire & Service IMCA Sport Compact feature was up first, with Luke Fraise and Kaycee McGregor leading the field to green. But it was fourth place starter Jared Heule who grabbed the lead on lap 1 over McGregor and Jason Ash, who started 7th. Ash would over take McGregor for the runner up spot on lap 2, and then went to work on Heule for the top spot. While Heule worked the bottom of the track, Ash worked the middle to top groove to try and get the lead away from Heule. The action was slowed for the first and only time on lap 7, as Ashton Blain spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Heule jumped back out front, with Ash and Brandon Reu, who started 9th, following close behind. Once again Ash would try to work past Heule over the next 3 laps, with Heule holding him off at the line. That was until lap 12 when Ash got under Heule coming off turn 4 to edge him out at the line by inches to take over the top spot. Ash then held off a last lap challenge from Heule to pick up his fourth win of the season at the track. Reu was 3rd, Kimberly Abbott was 4th after starting in 8th, with McGregor coming home in 5th.
Up next was the 18 lap Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA Late Model feature, with Matt Strassheim and Ron Boyse making up the front row. Strassheim took advantage of his starting spot by jumping out into the lead on lap 1 over Mark Burgtorf and Boyse. On lap 2 Burgtorf over took Boyse for the runner up spot, and then went to work on Strassheim for the top spot. Burgtorf would follow in Strassheim’s tire tracks, but wasn’t able to mount a challenge for the lead. As Strassheim held on to claim his first win of the season at the Pepsi Lee County Speedway. Burgtorf was 2nd, Tommy Elston was 3rd, Denny Woodworth was 4th, with Boyse rounding out the top 5.
Nicholas Profeta and Derek Goble led the field to green in the 18 lap Roberts Tire Center IMCA SportMod feature. But just as the green flag would wave the yellow light would come on, as Bob Cowman spun in turn 1 to bring out the yellow. On the original restart Austen Becerra, who started 5th, quickly shot to the front to grab the lead on lap 1 over Profeta and Barry Taft. While Becerra paced the field out front, Sean Wyett, who started 7th, Taft, Adam Birck, who started 8th, and Brandon Dale battled for the rest of the top five positions. The action up front was slowed on lap 10 when Cody Benjamin slowed in turn 1 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Goble would spin in turn 2 to bring the yellow light back on. The following restart saw Becerra jump back out front, with Wyett and Dale close behind. Another lap scored complete produced another caution, as Tom Ruble spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. Becerra once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Wyett and Dale still following. Just after the lap was scored complete another caution appeared, as Profeta spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Joe Roller spun in turn 2 to bring the yellow light back on. A third attempt of a restart produced another caution, as contact from Jim Powell sent Cowman spinning into the turn 3 guardrail to bring out the yellow. Becerra would grab the lead on the fourth restart, with Wyett and Birck giving chase. Wyett tried to challenge Becerra over the final laps, but Becerra was able to hold him off to score his sixth win of the season at the track. Birck was 3rd, Dale was 4th, with Taft rounding out the top 5.
Up next was the 18 lap Donnellson Tire & Service IMCA Stock Car feature, with Beau Taylor and Abe Huls making up the front row. On the drop of the green the field would race three and four wide of turn 2 for positions, with Taylor emerging from the pack to lead lap 1 over Huls and Jason Cook. John Oliver Jr., who started 5th, grabbed the runner up spot on lap 2, and then went to work on Taylor for the lead. Taylor, who was working the bottom, was able to hold off Oliver Jr., who was working the middle and top groove, at the line each lap. That was until lap 15, when Oliver Jr. used the momentum off the top of turn 4 to edge out Taylor at the line for the top spot. Huls would clear Taylor for the runner up spot coming to the white flag and would mount a challenge on Oliver Jr. going into turn 3. But Oliver Jr. was able to hold off Huls off turn 4 to claim his third win of the season at the Pepsi Lee County Speedway. Taylor was 3rd, Jeremy Pundt was 4th, with Cook coming home in 5th.
The final feature to take to the track was the 18 lap Sonny’s Super Market IMCA Modifieds, with Mitch Boles and Levi Smith leading the field to green. Boles took advantage of his starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Smith and Chad Giberson. On lap 4 Daniel Fellows would move into the runner up spot, and 1 lap later Michael Long, who started 9th, would take over the third spot. Those two driver’s would follow in Boles tire tracks over the next 10 laps. Coming to the white flag Long was able to get the runner up spot from Fellows and then challenged Boles on the final lap. But Boles would hold off Long to score his first win of the season at the track. Fellows was 3rd, Dennis LaVeine came from 10th to finish 4th, with Mark Burgtorf coming from 8th to round out the top 5.
Coming up next Friday, August 14th will be a regular weekly points night, presented by Conn Communications and U.S. Cellular. Burgtorf Becomes First Repeat Winner in “Drive For 5” Qualifiers
by Brian Neal
Donnellson, IA (Saturday, August 1, 2020) – A rare Saturday night racing event was held on August 1st at the Pepsi Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa, which featured the fourth Shottenkirk Parts Express “Drive For 5”, presented by Ideal Ready Mix, Floyd’s Waste Systems, J.J. Nichting Company Case IH, Woodworth Attorney at Law, Triple Seven Trucking, Triple R Performance Engines, KQ92, and Big Country 103.1, for the IMCA Late Models. In the previous three qualifying nights there had been three different winners, but that streak was broken Saturday night with Mark Burgtorf claiming his second win of the season.
The 15 lap Discount Tire & Service IMCA Sport Compact feature was first to take to the track, with Brandon Reu and Brandon Crawley drawing the front row. Reu would take advantage of his draw to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Jash Ash and Adam Christy, who started 9th. While Ash followed in Reu’s tire tracks, Christy, Jared Heule, who started 7th, and Kimberly Abbott, who started 6th, swapped positions three thur fifth over the entire 15 laps. Meanwhile up front Ash tried the low and middle grooves to try and get the lead away from Reu. But without Reu making any mistakes over the entire race, he would hold on to claim the $400 top prize and his third win of the season at the track. Ash was 2nd, Abbott won the battle for 3rd, Christy was 4th, with Heule rounding out the top 5.
Brian Stanfill and Tyler Roth led the field to green in the 15 lap IMRA Midget feature, with Stanfill grabbing the lead on lap 1 over Brent Burrows and Mark McMahill. Burrows would try to work under Stanfill over the next 4 laps, and when that didn’t work he decided to try the middle groove. Which paid off, as he grabbed the top spot away from Stanfill on lap 6. Stanfill then followed Burrows over the next 5 laps, when the action was slowed on lap 11. Will Armitage spun in turn 4 to bring out the first yellow of the race. On the restart Burrows jumped back out front, with Stanfill and McMahill close behind. Then just after the lap was scored complete the second caution of the race appeared, as John Heitzman spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. Burrows jumped back out front on the restart and would hold on over the final laps to pick up his first win of the season at the Pepsi Lee County Speedway. Stanfill was 2nd, McMahill was 3rd, Roth was 4th, with Chris Adrien coming from 9th to finish 5th.
Up next was the 25 lap Shottenkirk Parts Express “Drive For 5”, presented by Ideal Ready Mix, Floyd’s Waste Systems, J.J. Nichting Company Case IH, Woodworth Attorney at Law, Triple Seven Trucking, Triple R Performance Engines, KQ92, and Big Country 103.1 IMCA Late Model feature, with Nick Marolf and Andy Eckrich drawing the front row. Marolf used his draw to his advantage by grabbing the lead on lap 1 over Mark Burgtorf and the youngster CJ Horn. Burgtorf tried to work under Marolf over the next three laps, but Marolf was able to hold him off at the line each lap. Then coming off turn 4 to complete lap 5, Burgtorf was able to get under Marolf and would edge him out at the line by inches to take over the top spot. Just after the lap was scored complete the first and only caution of the race slowed the action, as Matt Strassheim spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Burgtorf jumped back out front, with Marolf and Horn close behind. Burgtorf would start to put some distance between himself and the battles going on behind him, when he started to enter the back of the field on lap 20. This would allow Marolf and Dustin Griffin, who started 6th, to close back in on Burgtorf’s back bumper with 5 laps to go. Despite a last lap challenge from Marolf, Burgtorf was able to hold on to pick up his second “Drive For 5” qualifying win of the season at the track and the $1,000 top prize to go with it. Marolf settled for 2nd, Griffin was 3rd, Horn was 4th, with Eckrich holding on for 5th.
Twenty-five of the scheduled twenty-seven starters took to the track next for the 18 lap Roberts Tire Center IMCA SportMod feature, with Dylan Van Wyk and Brandon Dale making up the front row. Dale jumped out front on lap 1 over Van Wyk and Tim Plummer, and then held it until lap 3 when he spun in front of the field in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Kaleb Nevers spun in turn 4 to bring the yellow light back on. The following restart saw Van Wyk grab the lead, with Plummer and Logan Anderson, who started 10th close behind. Two more laps were scored complete when the third caution of the race appeared on lap 6, as Reed Wolfmeyer spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. Van Wyk moved back out front on the restart, with Anderson and Plummer following. Anderson, who was working the top of the track, tried to wrestle the lead away from Van Wyk over the next three laps, when the final caution of the race slowed the action on lap 10. As Shaun Slaughter spun in turn 1 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Van Wyk jumped back out front, with Plummer edging out Anderson for the runner up spot. Anderson would grab the runner up spot back from Plummer on lap 12 and then went to work on Van Wyk for the top spot. Van Wyk would hold off Anderson over the final laps to score his first win of the season at the Pepsi Lee County Speedway, which was also worth $1,000. Brayton Carter, who started 9th, edged out Plummer on the final lap to claim 3rd, with Carter VanDenBerg finishing 5th after starting in 11th.
Damon Murty and Shawn Ritter drew the front row for the 18 lap Donnellson Tire & Service IMCA SportMod feature. But it was third place starter Abe Huls who edged out Damon Murty at the line to lead lap 1. Damon Murty would come back on the next lap to grab the top spot away from Huls. The action up front was slowed for the first time, as Dallon Murty nosed it into the guardrail in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Damon Murty jumped back out front, with Huls and David Brandies close behind. Just after the lap was scored complete the second caution appeared, as Jared Miller got into Jerry Jansen who spun in turn 1 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Brandies got under Damon Murty to take the lead. The following lap, lap 8, Huls used the momentum off the top to get the lead back. The two and even three wide racing for the top six spots was slowed on lap 12, when Jake Powers spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. Huls jumped back out front on the restart, with Brandies and Ritter following. After the lap was scored complete Powers would spin in turn 4 to bring out the yellow and ended his night. On the restart Huls jumped back out front, with Brandies and Ritter still close behind. One more lap completed, lap 15, the final caution of the race appeared, as Kenzie Ritter spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. Once again Huls grabbed the lead on the restart, with Ritter and Damon Murty following. As Brandies drifted high off 4 and fell back to 9th. Huls would hold on over the final laps to claim his first win of the season at the track, which was worth $1,000. Ritter was 2nd, Damon Murty was 3rd, John Oliver Jr. came from 10th to finish 4th, with Jeremy Pundt coming from 8th to finish 5th.
The final feature to take to the track on the night was the 20 lap Sonny’s Super Market IMCA Modifieds, with Michael Long and Daniel Fellows leading the field to the drop of the green flag. Long used his draw to his advantage by grabbing the lead on lap 1 over Fellows and Mark Burgtorf. The action was slowed for the first and only time on lap 5, as Blake Woodruff spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Long jumped back out front, with Derrick Stewart over taking Burgtorf for the runner up spot. Stewart tried to keep pace with Long, and despite lapped traffic late in the race Long would cruise to the $1,000 win. Which happened to be his sixth win of the season at the Pepsi Lee County Speedway. Stewart was 2nd, Dennis LaVeine started 7th and finished 3rd, Burgtorf was 4th, with Jeff Waterman coming home in 5th.
Coming up next Friday, August 7th will be a regular weekly points night, presented by Buford’s Dozing & Excavating and Big Country 103.1. Griffin Returns to the Driver’s Seat to Claim the IMCA Late Model Feature
by Brian Neal
Donnellson, IA (Friday, July 24, 2020) – The racing action on Friday, July 24th at the Pepsi Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa was just as hot as the temperatures outside. As a smooth and dry slick racing surface helped to produce some great two and three wide racing, which was brought to you by Darkside Tint & Graphix and Coal Haus 337. At the end of the night two driver’s claimed their first wins of the season at the track, while four others remained red hot.
Up first on the night was the 20 lap IMRA Midget feature, with Brian Stanfill and Bart Andrews drawing the front row. Stanfill used his draw to his advantage to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Andrews and Brent Burrows. While Stanfill paced the field out front, Andy Baugh, who had troubles in his heat race and had to start 14th in the feature, was working his way towards the front. On lap 8 Baugh was able to over take Burrows for the runner up spot, and then went to work on chasing down Stanfill for the top spot. Baugh got the help he was looking for when Will Armitage spun in turn 2 on lap 11 to bring out the yellow, and bunched the field up for the restart. On the restart Stanfill moved back out front, with Baugh and Burrows close behind. Just after the lap was scored complete the red would come on, as Kevin Battefeld, who was running 4th, got upside down in turn 4. He would climb from his car okay. Stanfill once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Baugh and Burrows following. Baugh tried to keep pace with Stanfill over the final laps, but Stanfill was too strong on this night. As he held on to claim his first win of the season at the track. Baugh was 2nd, Burrows was 3rd, Kevin Douglas came from 8th to 4th, with Jacob Sollenberger finishing 5th after starting in 10th.
Josh Barnes and Kaycee McGregor led the field to green in the 15 lap Discount Tire and Service IMCA Sport Compact feature, with Barnes grabbing the lead on lap 1 over McGregor and Jared Heule. While Barnes set the pace out front Jason Ash, who started 7th, and Brandon Reu, who started 11th, were working their way towards the front. The action up front was slowed on lap 6, when Braeden Barlow spun in turn 2 to bring out the caution. On the restart Barnes jumped back out front, with Heule, Ash and Reu battling for the runner up spot. The second caution of the race appeared on lap 10, when Robert Sturms lost a right rear tire coming off turn 4 to bring out the yellow. Barnes once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Ash over taking Heule for second. Heule’s run up front came to an end on lap 13, as he slowed to a stop in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Quinton Shelton got into McGregor and she would spin down the frontstretch to bring the yellow light back on. Barnes, who was running the middle of the track, and Ash, who was running the top, raced around the 3/8th mile track side-by-side over the final two laps, with Ash edging out Barnes at the line by inches to pick up his third win of the season at the Pepsi Lee County Speedway. Chuck Fullenkamp came from 10th to finish 3rd, Kimberly Abbott started 9th and finished 4th, with Reu rounding out the top 5.
The 20 lap Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA Late Model feature was up next, with Dustin Griffin and Matt Strassheim making up the front row for the event. Griffin would take advantage of his starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Nick Marolf and Mark Burgtorf. Marolf tried to keep pace with Griffin over the entire race. But without a caution there was no catching Griffin, as he pulled away to claim his first win of the season at the track. It was also Griffin’s first win in three years, as he has sat out of racing. The win was worth $850 thanks to the Sunoco Racing Fuel bonus. Marolf settled for 2nd, Burgtorf was 3rd, Tommy Elston was 4th, with Denny Woodworth coming from 9th to finish 5th.
Nicholas Profeta and Bobby Six led the field to green in the 18 lap Roberts Tire Center IMCA SportMod feature. Just as the green flag was waved the caution light would come on, as Brian Bergheger spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the original restart Profeta edged out Six at the line to lead lap 1. After the lap was scored complete, Bergheger spun in turn 3 to bring out his second caution to end his night. Tanner Klingele, who was working the top of the track, swept around Profeta and Six on the restart to grab the lead. On lap 5 Klingele moved down the track a groove, which allowed Austen Becerra, who started 8th, to use the high line to grab the top spot. Then just after the lap was scored complete Logan Cumby spun in turn 2 to bring out the caution. Disaster would strike Six on the restart, as Powell got into him and spun him in turn 2. which collected Barry Taft, Jim Walker and Kyle Hamelton to bring the yellow light back on. Becerra jumped back out front on the next restart, with Brandon Dale, who started 12th, over taking Klingele for second. The fifth and final caution of the race appeared after lap 6 was scored complete, as Profeta spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. Once again Becerra grabbed the lead on the restart, with Dale and Klingele following. Despite lapped traffic late in the race, there was no challenging Becerra who went on to win his second in a row and fifth of the season at the Pepsi Lee County Speedway. Dale was 2nd, Klingele was 3rd, Adam Birck came from 10th to finish 4th, with Powell coming back to 5th.
Up next was the 18 lap Donnellson Tire & Service IMCA Stock Car feature, with Beau Taylor and Jerry Jansen making up the front row. But it was third place starter Jermey Pundt who jumped out into the lead on lap 1 over Taylor and Jason Cook. While Pundt, who was working the bottom of the track, set the pace out front, Taylor, Cook and John Oliver Jr. raced two and three wide for the runner up spot. Oliver Jr. was able to take control of the runner up spot on lap 8, and then went to work on Pundt for the lead. Pundt and Oliver Jr. crossed the finish line side-by-side on lap 12, with Pundt still scored the leader. But coming off turn 2 Oliver Jr. was able to clear Pundt to take command of the race on lap 13. From there Oliver Jr. would pull away to pick up his second win in a row and third overall at the track. Pundt was 2nd, Cook was 3rd, Taylor was 4th, with Jansen coming home in 5th.
The final feature to take to the track was the 20 lap Sonny’s Super Market IMCA Modifieds, with Todd Bates and Daniel Fellows leading the field to green. Fellows used his front row starting spot to his advantage, as he led lap 1 over Michael Long and Dennis LeVeine. The lead for Fellows lasted for one lap, as Long raced past him for the top spot on lap 2. The action was slowed on lap 4, when Levi Smith spun in turn 2 to bring out the caution. On the restart Mark Burgtorf and Bill Roberts Jr. got together in turn 4 to bring the yellow light back on. The following restart saw Long jump back out front, with LaVeine and Jeff Waterman following. Without a caution over the final 15 laps to bunch the field up, there was no catching Long on this night. As he pulled away to claim his fifth win of the season at the Pepsi Lee County Speedway. LaVeine was 2nd, Roberts Jr. recovered from the lap 4 caution to come back up to finish 3rd, Burgtorf also recovered from the lap 4 caution to come back up to finish 4th, with Waterman rounding out the top 5.
